What “manufacturing cost” actually includes

The phrase gets used loosely, and that’s part of why quotes look so inconsistent. In practice, a sunglasses price can refer to several different things:

  • Ex-factory unit price — the cost per piece once production is running, before shipping or duties
  • Mold or tooling cost — a one-time fee tied to a specific design, separate from the per-piece price
  • Sample cost — often higher per piece than bulk production, since it’s a one-off run

Material is usually the single biggest driver

Frame material sets the floor for your cost before anything else is factored in:

  • Acetate sits in the mid-to-premium range. It’s cut and polished from sheet rather than molded, which means more manual finishing labor — richer color depth comes at the cost of more hands-on production time.
  • TR90 is generally the most cost-efficient at scale once a mold exists, since it’s injection molded rather than hand-finished. The tradeoff is a mold investment upfront and a higher MOQ to make that investment worthwhile.
  • Stainless steel falls in a similar range to acetate — durable and workable, without the premium of precious or rare-earth metals.
  • Titanium is the most expensive of the four. Both the raw material and the machining required to work it push the unit cost well above the others, which is why it’s typically positioned for premium collections.

Combining materials — acetate fronts with metal temples, for example — adds a joining step and typically lands between the two base materials in cost, not simply the average of both.

Design complexity and customization level

A style built from an existing mold with minor color or logo changes will always price lower than a fully custom shape. Complexity that adds cost includes:

  • Multi-piece construction (spring hinges, interchangeable parts, metal-acetate combinations)
  • Non-standard hinge or temple mechanisms
  • Tight tolerances on curve, wrap, or fit
  • Multiple colorways or lens tints in the same style, each requiring separate setup

None of this means custom designs aren’t worth doing — it just means the cost difference between “close to an existing style” and “built from zero” should be part of the conversation before sampling starts.

Mold and tooling investment

For fully custom acetate, metal, or TR90 designs, mold cost is a one-time fee, separate from the per-piece production price. It’s tied to the design, not the order — a larger order doesn’t cost more in tooling, but it does spread that fixed cost over more units, lowering its effective impact on your per-piece price.

This investment is not the same size across materials. Acetate and metal tooling tends to be a smaller cost, since the mold is doing less of the shaping work than in injection molding. PC and TR90 styles rely on injection molding for the entire frame, so the mold itself is a bigger, more precise piece of tooling — and the fee reflects that.   • CR-39 — the standard resin option, reliable optical clarity, generally the most affordable
  • Nylon — more impact-resistant, common for sport-oriented styles, priced above CR-39
  • TAC — typically used as the base for polarized lenses, a cost-effective way to offer polarization
  • Polarized, gradient, mirror, or photochromic treatments — each adds a processing step and cost on top of the base lens material

Mixing treatments (e.g., polarized and gradient on the same lens) compounds rather than replaces these costs.

Edge finishing is a smaller but easy-to-overlook cost factor too — a standard flat edge is the default, while beveled or faceted edges (cut at an angle for a more dimensional look) add an extra cutting step and typically cost a bit more per piece.

Packaging and branding add-ons

  • Specifies the exact material grade and thickness (not just “acetate” or “metal”)

  • Confirms the lens type and treatment, not just “polarized” without specifying the base material
  • Clarifies whether the sample cost is credited against a future bulk order
  • Includes or excludes packaging, and to what level of detail
